It is a challenge for a goaltender to watch the play behind them while at the same time being aware of what is going on in front of the net. Forcing the goalie to move from one side of the net to the other at the same time makes it even more difficult.
Wrap-around attacks are an excellent attack option because of the challenge facing the goalie in defending against it. The puck moving behind the net takes that extra second for the goalie to read and then move to defend, allowing a
pass or the puck carrier to move to the other side for a wrap-around attempt or to bank the puck off the goalie as the the tender moves to cover the post.
